Caperdonich, 16-Year-Old Cask Strength Edition (Scotland) Caperdonich is a welcome arrival in Chivas’ ‘Cask Strength Edition’ range as this is one of the most elusive of all Speyside single malts, previously only bottled by independents. Caperdonich is the ‘sister’ distillery to the high profile Glen Grant in Rothes, and was established as ‘Glen Grant No.2 Distillery’ in 1898, though it only operated for three years before closing. After a long period of silence it was rebuilt and extended in the mid 1960s, but it is currently mothballed. The malt is a component of the Chivas Regal blend. Generally reckoned to be a little smokier and sweeter than Glen Grant, this example of Caperdonich exhibits a fresh, white wine nose with pears, followed by restrained maltiness. Dry and oaky, with slight ginger and hazelnut influences on the palate leading to a long, ever-drying finish. Available at Chivas Bros’ Strathisla, Glen Grant, Glenlivet and Aberlour visitor centres.
