The family-owned Speyside distillery ofGlenfarclas celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, and a forthcoming commemorative bottling will surely be snapped up by eager collectors of this highly regarded single malt.
Glenfarclas, 15-year-old (Scotland)
Such rarities aside, our favourite expression of Glenfarclas is the 15-year-old, which is profound, rounded, complex and balanced in a way that serves as a master-class in how Sherried Scotch whiskies should be presented. Very sweet on the nose, oloroso Sherry, warm leather, ginger, malt, dates and raisins, plus developing vanilla and American cream soda notes. Becoming a little drier and more liquorice-like with time. Smooth, substantial and insinuating on the palate, subtly spicy, with Jaffa oranges, hazelnuts and very gentle, smoky peat. Medium to long in the finish, with soft oak and dark chocolate notes. Immensely well –mannered, and a great whisky for those evenings by the fireside when the cold of winter reminds us that spring is still some time away. 46.0% ABV, 70cl, £36.95, specialist whisky merchants.
