Wemyss Vintage Malts, Whispering Smoke 1981 (Scot)
Pick of the latest batch of single cask releases from Wemyss Malts' Summer List is this 30-year-old offering from an un-named Islay distillery. Susan Colville, Regional Sales Manager for Wemyss Malts, says that “I am particularly excited that we are able to release a 30-year-old single cask as part of this latest bottling. Our single cask bottlings are becoming increasingly sought after and, with only 228 bottles, ‘Whispering Smoke’ will soon become a collector’s item.” A complex nose which offers stewed apples, orange wine gums, developing vanilla, apricots and peach cobbler, all allied to a whiff of hot bitumen and a smoky backdrop. Smooth and full-bodied, with soft, spicy peat and summer fruits. The addition of water entices out clearly defined peach and apricot fruit notes, plus barley sugar. Progressively drying oak in an always benign, lengthy finish. A note of milk chocolate develops when water is added. 46.0% ABV, 70cl, £150.00, specialist whisky merchants.
