Glenmorangie, 1981 Pride (Scotland)
1981 Pride is the third bottling in Glenmorangie’s ‘Private Collection,’ following on from Glenmorangie Sonnalta PX - finished in ex-Pedro Ximinez sherry casks - and Finealta - containing a portion of whisky made from lightly-peated malt and whisky of varying ages, matured in a mix of ex-sherry casks and plain, new American oak. Glenmorangie Pride 1981 has been initially matured for 18 years in ex-Bourbon casks before spending an additional decade in Sauternes barriques from Chateau d’Yquem. An intense, pungent, earthy nose, with polished furniture, spices, oak tannins, and liquorice. The palate is waxy, with sherbet, honey, baked apple, orange marmalade, sultanas and a hint of smoke in the lengthy finish. A very untypical Glenmorangie, and another fascinating example of innovation by Glenmorangie’s Dr Bill Lumsden. 56.7% ABV, 70cl, £2,500.00, specialist whisky merchants.
