Compass Box, Great King Street - Artist's Blend
John Glaser's Compass Box Whisky Co has become a by-word for innovation, experimentation and the pursuit of excellence in whisky-making. Blended malts such as The Spice Tree and Oak Cross and the blended grain whisky Hedonism are already highly respected, and now Glaser and his team have turned their hands to creating a premium blended Scotch whisky. The Great King Street blend employs the principles of using the highest quality component whiskies and casks, and Artist's Blend is the first edition on what will be an on-going series of releases with a range of variables. The blend comprises just over 50 per cent grain whisky, in excess of 40 per cent of two Northern Highland single malts and almost eight per cent of a Speyside single malt. Maturation has taken place in a mix of first-fill American oak barrels, first-fill sherry butts and the company's bespoke casks with toasted French oak heads, as employed for The Spice Tree and Oak Cross. The result is a polished, luxurious blend, with a rich, spicy nose of marshmallow, orange peel, malt and caramel. The palate is smooth, with milk chocolate, baked apple and nutmeg. Medium to long in the finish, with lingering chocolate toffee notes and persistent spice. 43.0% ABV, 50cl, £25.00, distillery website, specialist whisky merchants.
