Talisker, Dark Storm (Scotland)
Diageo has been extending the range of its highly popular Talikser single malt of late, adding the more ‘maritime’ Talisker Storm, Port Ruighe (with a port finish) and Dark Storm. None of the new expressions carry age statements, and Dark Storm is exclusive to travel retail outlets. Diageo describe it as the smokiest Talisker to date, and this effect has principally been achieved by using some heavily-charred casks for maturation. The nose is relatively citric, with fruity spices, brine and then developing big notes of wood smoke. The fruity spice carries over onto the palate, where vanilla and liquorice also figure, and the prominent smokiness remains in balance with the other flavour elements. Chilli powder, black pepper and, inevitably, more smoke in the medium-length finish. Talisker max! 45.8% ABV, 100cl, £45.00, Duty Free & Travel Retail.
