Mortlach, 15 Year Old (Gordon & Macphail) (Scotland)
With Diageo about to dramatically raise the profile and availability of its Mortlach single malt during the next few months (see December's Whisky News) this seems a good time to renew acquaintance with this distinctive Speysider. The most easily obtained expression is this good value 15-year-old from Elgin's Gordon & MacPhail, matured in refill sherry casks. Sweet, malty and fruity on the nose. Apricots, milk chocolate and icing sugar. Dates, glace cherries, then peppery spices. Big notes of sweet, leathery sherry on the full palate, with sultanas and cinnamon. Black pepper, liquorice and oak in the relatively long, fruity and spicy finish. 43.0% ABV, 70cl, £40.00, specialist whisky merchants.
