Ian Macleod Distillers, 'As We Get It' 8-Year-Old Highland Single Malt (Scotland)
Ian Macleod Distillers Ltd own Glengoyne and Tamdhu distilleries, and are also noted for their Isle of Skye blended Scotch and Smokehead Islay single malt. Additionally, the company produces Highland and Islay variants of its ‘As We Get It’ expressions. These are cask strength ‘small batch’ expressions from undisclosed distilleries, and the strength varies slightly from bottling to bottling. There is no chill-filtration. For many years, the Highland expression was sourced from The Macallan, but these days it is most likely to come from Glengoyne. It has been matured in first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks. As a cask-strength, Oloroso-cask-matured whisky with no age statement, As We Get It’s most obvious rival is Aberlour a’bunadh. The nose offers drinking chocolate, a fleeting whiff of balloon rubber, vanilla, prunes and big, sweet sherry notes. Bold, spicy and sugary sweet in the mouth, with caramel and a fruity tang. The drying finish yields a hint of Jaffa orange and dark spicy chocolate. A dash of water soothes this powerful sherry monster, allowing it to shine in all its after-dinner-with-a-cigar glory. 58.9% ABV, 70cl, £48.00, specialist whisky merchants.
