Aultmore, 25 Years Old (Scotland)
As part of its programme to make whiskies from its portfolio of malt distilleries more readily available, John Dewar & Sons Ltd has recently launched three aged expressions of Aultmore, produced near Keith, in the heart of Speyside. The trio of bottlings are 12, 21 and 25-year –olds, with the 21-year-old being exclusive to travel retail outlets. For us, the pick of an impressive bunch is the 25-year-old, which offers an opening nose of honey and vanilla, with milk chocolate, ripe pears, tinned peaches, white pepper and a slightly earthy note. Mouth-coating and rich, yet elegant on the palate, with more peaches in syrup, spicy citrus fruit, and pepper. Long in the finish, with mustard, musty fruit and a final hint of dark chocolate. A fine example of a classic old Speyside malt deservedly given a higher profile. 46.0% ABV, 70cl, £295.00, specialist whisky merchants.
