Laphroaig, 15 Year Old (Scotland)
Laphroaig first released a 15-year-old expression during the 1980s, but it was discontinued after an 18-year-old was introduced in 2009. Now, however, as part of the Islay distillery’s bicentenary celebrations the 15-year-old is back. It offers the same sort of totally authentic Laphroaig experience as the upfront 10-year-old, but longer maturation has added a veneer of sophistication and additional complexity. Brine, tarry peat, warm leather, pepper and salted caramel on the nose. The palate is mellow and medicinal, with sweet, spicy smoke, citrus fruit and a hint of chilli. Long in the earthy finish, with a citrus tang; ashy, with drying smoke. 43.0% ABV, 70cl, £69.50, specialist whisky merchants.
