Compass Box, This is Not a Luxury Whisky (Scotland)
The somewhat bizarre name for the latest release this month from Compass Box is a reference to celebrated surrealist artist René Magritte’s and his 1929 painting of a tobacco pipe, titled 'Ceci n’est pas une pipe,' intended to challenges peoples’ perceptions of reality. Just 4,992 bottles of this un-chill-filtered blended Scotch have been released, and it comprises 79 per cent 19-year-old Glen Ord single malt matured in first-fill Sherry butts, four per cent of 30-year-old Caol Ila from refill American oak hogsheads, 10.1 per cent 40-year-old Strathclyde grain and 6.9 per cent 40-year-old Girvan grain. Initially leafy and herbal on the nose, then floral and vanilla notes blossom, along with fat Sherry. Viscous on the palate, and intensely fruity, with coconut, sweet sherry and wood smoke. Long and spicy in the finish, with lingering sherried smoke and liquorice. One of the classiest blends you’ll ever find! 53.1% ABV, 70, 150.00, specialist whisky merchants.
